Don't buy an old piano that is offered for sale privately without getting it checked by a piano tuner first. Especially do avoid older "over damper" pianos (see photo). It is not even worth getting a technician to look at these. They are not worth buying. A couple hundred dollars may seem cheap but it is lost money if it turns out that the piano cannot be tuned.
